An Introduction to Leonardo's Notebook

Which group of ancient people do you think lived in these mysterious caves?

WELCOME TO 6TH GRADE HISTORY! I am very excited to get to know each of you.  We are going to have an excellent year learning about the world and its fascinating history.

Do you know who this is?
This blog is called Leonardo's Notebook. It will serve as one tool in our discussion of history.

As you will quickly learn, I love photographs, artwork, and maps. I think this blog will be a helpful place to highlight those items. I will also post class materials on the blog, including the weekly history videos.

This year's history class will focus on the following five themes:
  • The importance of asking questions
  • The influence of technology on human life (for better and for worse)
  • The central role of religion and belief in history
  • Leadership - with a focus on different styles and methods of being a leader
  • The centrality of art, music, and architecture to the human experience
On the blog, we will be able to track the ways in which these five themes are interwoven through different periods of history.

Irrigation ditches were an important ancient technology. 
Can you imagine how ditches could have changed the entire course of history?!

Most importantly, the blog will feature your questions and your ideas. In the same way that Leonardo da Vinci wrote down his thoughts and questions so that he could reflect on them later, we will use the blog as a way of thinking more deeply about your questions.

Griffin : I looked over my shoulder and there it was: the supreme art by so many artists, with the vivid colors popping out at you. I don’t pay attention to the detail of the objects or animals in the picture, but actually the detail of the color of the art. It was outstanding that they used gold so much, even mixing it with the other colors, to represent heaven. I loved the use of brown as well. One of my classmates said that the brown wasn’t as vivid and did not strike out as much. I disagree, because brown can bring the best colors in a picture to life. It almost felt that I was in the picture watching myself in astonishment, seeing myself darting my eyes to everything I saw in the beautiful painted picture.
